Admissions Frequently Asked Questions
What is required for admission into Cox College (general education classes)?

 Answer
: Applicants may be admitted to the college for general education classes after they submit to the Admissions Office:

1.
A completed application for admission.
2.
$30 application fee.
3.
An official high school transcript or GED score report.
4.

Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended (regardless of status – withdrew, dropped, etc).
5.
Official ACT or SAT score reports (if applicable).

Additional requirements may include:

1.
Official CLEP reports.
2.
Official Advanced Placement (AP) reports.
3.
Copy of Missouri LPN license.
4.
Copy of Missouri RN license.
5.
Copy of permanent residence card.


NOTE: The transcripts must be mailed from the high school and college(s) directly to Cox College and must have the school seal and/or an original signature to be considered “official.”  

Why should I take my required general education courses at Cox College?  

Answer
: Students who complete required general education courses at Cox College will receive a specific healthcare-related education for all classes. At another college, you may be in a class with 30 other students and all 30 are seeking a different degree or program of study. To be eligible for preference in the ranking process for admission to the Nursing program, applicants must have greater or equal to 60% of their general education courses taken at Cox College.

Do you request my transcripts from other schools or do I have to do that?

Answer: It is the responsibility of the applicant to contact each school attended (including high school) to request transcripts. Please have official transcripts mailed to:

Will courses I’ve taken at other colleges transfer to Cox College?  

Answer
: Maybe. If the course is listed on the Transfer Course Equivalent List – yes. Courses must have been taken at a regionally accredited college/university and you must have earned a grade of “C” or better. The process for requesting transfer credit is:

You must have already applied for general admission to the college.
2.
Submit a letter to the Registrar requesting faculty review of course(s).
3.
Submit course syllabi to be evaluated that includes:

Course objectives
 
Content outline
 
Evaluation methods

How can I be admitted to the nursing program?

 Answer
: Understand that completion of either the ASN or BSN program will prepare you to take the State Board Exam (NCLEX-RN ®) to be a registered nurse; however, completion of either program does not guarantee registered nurse status. Applicants must be admitted to the college before being considered for matriculation into any of the program-specific classes offered. An Application for Matriculation must be completed and submitted to the Admission Office before the deadline date. Matriculation is offered to the highest-ranking students as determined by selection criteria. (For more details, refer to the specific programs in the current catalog).

When do I need to apply to be considered for the fall or spring semester for nursing classes?

: January 15 to be considered to start nursing classes in the fall semester August 15 for the spring semester

How much do registered nurses earn?

Answer
: The starting salary for registered nurses in Springfield is between $15 and $17 per hour, depending on the area in which they work. A new graduate that starts with CoxHealth would have a base hourly wage of $17,00; $2 per hour for shift differential (weekends/overnights); $1-2 per hour for BSN; and more for special certifications. This makes the average for a nurse to come out to about $35,880 a year. The national average is $32,000 - $48,000 a year.

How much will I earn doing medical transcription and medical billing-coding?

 Answer
: The starting salary for medical transcription at CoxHealth is $10 an hour. Other companies pay by the line so speed and accuracy determine salary. There is a potential of earning as much as $20 an hour. The starting salary for medical coding is $9 an hour with a potential of earning up to $16 an hour after experience.

Will CoxHealth pay for me to go to nursing school if I sign a contact to work for them after I graduate?

Answer
: CoxHealth Human Resources Department does have a financial assistance plan available for students who have matriculated into the nursing program. By completing the application and providing proof of registration in nursing classes, a student will be considered for the assistance plan. If accepted, the student may borrow up to $2,500 each semester for a maximum of $10,000. In return, the student signs a promissory note and a contract to work for CoxHealth one year for every $2,500 borrowed. If the contract is fulfilled, the loan is forgiven. I am a senior in high school and am eligible for A+ funds. I can attend a community college free for two years.

Will the classes I complete there transfer to Cox College?

Answer
: Yes, if they are general education courses that are required in Cox College curriculum and listed on the Transfer Course Equivalent list. Apply after you meet the minimum matriculation criteria, because the ASN nursing classes will take two years to complete even if you have attended another college for two years.
