Biography

Dr. Branstetter joined Cox College in 1999 after teaching for five and a half years at Fort Scott Community College in southeast Kansas. Dr. Branstetter has taught clinical and theory in the ASN program (NURS 100, NURS 101, NURS 102, NURS 105, NURS 106, NURS 205, and NURS 208) and in the accelerated and entry-level BSN program (NURS 304, NURS 308, NURS 310, and NRSI 400). Currently, she teaches medical-surgical and pediatric theory and clinical in NURS 106 and the theories and research course in the BSN program. Dr. Branstetter has served on many College teams (APG, Evaluation, ASN and BSN program), Faculty Senate, and special projects as needed, including data analysis projects and serving as the Higher Learning Commission Self-Study and comprehensive site visit coordinator (2003-2005) and editor for the CCNE Self-Study and CCNE Standard I Chair (2007).

Dr. Branstetter received her BSN from Pittsburg State University in 1984. She received a masters degree focused on special services and administrative studies from Pittsburg State University in 1992. Her research interest for this degree was adolescent perceptions of parenting style and its relationship to academic achievement. She received her MS (N) (pediatric clinical nurse specialist track) from the University of Kansas in 1997. She received her PhD (research-focused) from the University of Kansas in 2007. Her current research interests include family communication patterns in families of children with chronic conditions, type and frequency of well child-sibling caregiving in families of children with chronic conditions, issues related to homeless individuals, and instrument development. Her favorite nurse theorist is Rosemarie Parse (Theory of Human Becoming). She has worked in rural hospitals in Kansas and Missouri and as a nurse at a Health Department (chronic illness screening, family planning, and well-baby clinics, and school nursing). Teaching and research are her passions. She has a 10-year-old Shih Tzu named Molly.
